Our first autumn topic is 'Ourselves'. This allows us to get to know the children and supports them settling into school. The children love to share their likes, dislikes and opinions while getting to know the school staff a little better! The specific details may change according to the children's interests.
Our second autumn topic is 'Tremendous Toys'. The exciting build up to Christmas allows us to link lots of learning opportunities and passions.
Our first spring topic is 'Cold Lands'. This is usually the children's favourite topic to do. Guided by our children's interests and questions, we will learn all about the life of animals that live in cold lands. We will learn about how they are adapted for the cold and the similarities and differences between the animals within the Arctic and Antarctic. This will be linked to a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
Our summer term topic of 'The Story of Food' often leads to questions from the children regarding how different foods are grown. We hold a 'child initiated planning session' where the children can ask questions about the growth of food and link them to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. Learning the story of the Little Red Hen and the Runaway Pizza will lead us into extending our sentence writing through the use of Pie Corbetts Talk for Writing technique.
